Mount Carmel New Albany

Challenge:

To add capacity to an existing hospital for increased volumes in Orthopedics. An original design had previously created a single story addition which created several operational inefficiencies. These inefficiencies needed to be rectified and the facility needed rightsizing and proper workflows.

Outcomes:

The original one-story design became a two-story facility. This change saved the land for possible future expansion and kept inpatient beds adjacent to the original nursing units. The new surgery suite accommodated four additional OR’s dedicated to Orthopedics and increased capacity in Central Sterile. The existing Pre-Post Op area was expanded and separated creating a 26 bay level one and level two PACU. Expansion of Central Sterile was also included in this project. The entire design allowed the hospital to recognize an estimated $8 million savings over a 10 year period.
