Grant ICU Vertical Expansion

Grant Medical Center, a member of the OhioHealth System, is the busiest Level I trauma center in the state of Ohio and serves as the major provider of critical care services for downtown Columbus. Recognizing the need to increase bed capacity and address the growing need for inpatient services, Trinity was selected to explore options that would maximize flexibility and create a new, modern image. With interior modernization options depleted and the ability to create a new bed tower expansion not feasible, the team chose to vertically expand above the current ICU and front lobby.

The expansion was constructed above the hospital’s main entrance, imaging, and dining and directly above the busiest and most acute adult critical care unit in the state. In addition to structural challenges, the expansion posed an aesthetic challenge as well—how to incorporate a single-story expansion with a larger existing structure that would transform the entrance into a cohesive modern image.

Conceived and executed as the fulcrum of a new modern image, Grant Medical Center’s ICU Expansion gives the entire campus an uplifting and more appropriate urban image while serving as a beacon of healing for patients and families. A creative design solution eliminated the need for structural reinforcements by reducing the height of the expansion to an untraditional thirteen feet. Working closely with the engineering and contractor team, infrastructure was strategically located in the plan to accommodate 10-foot high ceilings in the patient rooms and clear ceilings in the corridor to accommodate skylights.

The exterior design incorporated several innovative features to enhance patient experience, clarify wayfinding and reinforce branding. With a distinctive cantilever that responds to the tight physical constraints of the urban site, the addition articulates the hospital’s entrance and intuitively improves the patient and visitor experience. An existing roof space where 12 patient rooms and family waiting areas are sited was transformed with views into a landscaped garden space that enhances an indoor-outdoor connection.
