The Association for Learning Environments has announced three finalists in the James D. MacConnell Awards for 2017, including Hazel Wolf K-8 E-STEM School. As the most prestigious of all the Association's awards, the MacConnell Award honors projects for achieving a great architectural solution through actively engaging stakeholders in all phases of the project and enhancing the connections between environment, learning and teaching.
As a pioneer in Environmental STEM (E-STEM) education, Hazel Wolf K-8 is a case study for outdoor learning on a tight urban site. All learning is focused through an environmental lens, and stakeholders including community members and teachers were integral in planning the new building and site to encourage and enhance learning activities. The site is conceived as a lab with a variety of indoor/outdoor learning areas. Visual connections across the building and site foster students' excitement through seeing learning in action.
