“Mallspital – A Transformative Journey from Mall to Hospital”
Healthcare Facilities Symposium and Expo, September 2017, Austin, Texas.
Andrew von Lohr, AIA, NCARB spoke about the rising need for innovative and sustainable design solutions to address vacated malls across America. Andrew shared insights and lessons learned from designing and re-purposing a 90,000 sf, 1960’s abandoned Lazarus anchor commercial retail space at the Richland Mall in Ontario, Ohio into the home of the third hospital for Avita Health System which opened January 2017.
Anticipating revitalization and an economically strengthened community, the project exemplifies a refreshing look at sustainability, both environmentally through the adaptive re-use of an aged building, and the development of a “right sized” facility that contributes less to rising healthcare costs. Presented with an unconventional floor plate, Trinity maximized efficiency and optimized the plan. Chief Nursing Officer, Kathy Durflinger, RN, MBA, and Director of Plant Operations, Dave Morehead, MBA from Avita Health System joined Andrew for the presentation.
